The 2011 Fire Department Instructors Conference (FDIC) recently concluded, drawing fire service professionals from across the country to Indianapolis. The convention center was packed with exhibitors showcasing a wide range of equipment, from fire apparatus and gear to promotional items. This year, many of the traditional exhibits moved into the new facility, making for an even more dynamic event.
Among the local highlights was a Medtec Type III ambulance from Algonquin-Lake in the Hills displayed in the Pierce booth, as well as a Cyclone II 95-foot rear-mount tower ladder for University Park in the E-ONE booth. These units gave attendees a glimpse into the evolving technology and capabilities of modern fire apparatus.
Other notable displays included several units from the FDNY. A Wheeled Coach ambulance on a four-door Ford chassis was on display, alongside an engine in the Seagrave booth. Rescue 4 and Ladder 137 were also featured in the Ferrara booth, offering a comprehensive look at the department’s diverse fleet.
Seagrave showcased FDNY Engine 222, while Ferrara displayed Rescue 4 from Queens and Ladder 137. These exhibits highlighted the importance of collaboration between manufacturers and fire departments in developing specialized equipment.
Crimson presented a tandem axle rescue unit for Elizabeth, NJ, KME displayed a tiller for Norwalk, CT, American LaFrance showed a tiller for Ventura County, CA, and HME exhibited a Type III wildland pumper for CALFIRE. These units demonstrated the variety of vehicles used in different emergency response scenarios.
Pierce introduced the new Dash CF chassis under a PUC rescue pumper, along with a mini pumper on rubber tracks, both of which generated significant interest. Rosenbauer unveiled their Smart Cab enclosure, designed to add a crew area to commercial chassis-based units, enhancing comfort and functionality.
KME launched the Predator Pro Series, a pumper rescue unit, and introduced a new 79-foot ladder, showing continued innovation in aerial apparatus. Crimson also highlighted its recent acquisition of Classic Fire, featuring a "Transformer" model on a commercial chassis.
