At the Dallas Fort Worth Airport, a groundbreaking EV charging robot named ZiGGY is being tested this summer in parking lots, offering a glimpse into the future of electric vehicle (EV) charging. This innovative technology allows passengers and employees with electric cars to have their vehicles charged without having to find a charging station themselves.
ZiGGY, developed by Los Angeles-based company EV Safe Charge, is designed to autonomously travel to a parked car, charge it, and then return to its base. The robot can be summoned remotely, making the process seamless and efficient. It's not just about convenience — it also addresses a common problem at public charging stations: "ICEing," where internal combustion engine vehicles block access to EV charging spots.
The demonstration at DFW Airport, which runs from May through August, showcases the potential of mobile and flexible EV charging solutions. EV Safe Charge has partnered with major automotive brands such as Jaguar, Porsche, and Nissan, providing temporary and scalable charging options for large-scale commercial clients.
In a video demonstration, ZiGGY is shown booking a parking space remotely, reserving it, and then guiding the driver to the location. Once the car arrives, the robot moves aside, positions itself behind the vehicle, and begins the charging process. After the car is fully charged, ZiGGY returns to its base to recharge itself.
According to Caradoc Ehrenhalt, founder and CEO of EV Safe Charge, the airport chose ZiGGY for its unique ability to reach every car in a parking lot, rather than just a few designated spaces. This flexibility could revolutionize how EVs are charged in public areas.
