The JournalOnline recently published an article highlighting a significant achievement by the Prospect Heights Fire District, which has been awarded an ISO Class 3 rating for the first time in over 15 years. This improvement places the district among just 7% of Illinois communities and 4% of all U.S. communities that have reached this level of fire protection excellence. "We are very pleased with the outcome of the ISO evaluation," said Fire Chief Donald Gould. "This rating means our residents and local businesses will benefit from lower fire insurance premiums, which is a huge advantage for the community." The Insurance Service Organization (ISO) evaluates fire departments across the country and uses its findings to determine appropriate fire insurance rates. Their assessments help insurance companies set fair premiums based on the quality of a community's fire protection services. Each fire department is assigned a Public Protection Classification (PPC), ranging from 1 to 10. A Class 1 is the highest possible rating, while a Class 10 indicates that the fire protection system does not meet ISO’s minimum requirements. The ISO rating system takes into account three key areas: alarm response (10%), fire department operations (50%), and water supply (40%). The last time the Prospect Heights Fire District was rated was in 1996, when it received a Class 4. Since then, the department has made several improvements, particularly in alarm handling and overall operations, according to Chief Gould. "We were just four points away from achieving a Class 2 rating," he added. "However, the biggest challenge remains the water supply, which makes up 40% of the overall score." In Prospect Heights, about 45% of the population relies on private wells for drinking water, but these wells do not provide water for firefighting. As a result, the fire district must depend on its own tanker trucks, long hose lines to distant hydrants, and assistance from neighboring communities during emergencies. This new ISO Class 3 rating reflects the hard work and dedication of the fire department and highlights the progress made in improving public safety. It also serves as a positive indicator for future development and investment in the area.
