The JournalOnline recently published an article highlighting a major achievement for the Prospect Heights Fire District, which has been awarded an ISO Class 3 rating for the first time in over 15 years. This significant improvement places the district among just 7% of Illinois communities and 4% of all U.S. communities that have achieved this high standard.

"We are extremely pleased with the outcome of the ISO evaluation," said Fire Chief Donald Gould. "This rating will help residents and local businesses enjoy lower fire insurance costs and better protection for their properties."

The Insurance Service Organization (ISO) evaluates fire departments across the country using a comprehensive system that helps insurance companies determine appropriate premiums. Their assessments take into account various factors related to fire suppression and community safety, ensuring that rates reflect the actual level of protection available.

Fire departments are assigned a Public Protection Classification (PPC), ranging from 1 to 10. A Class 1 is the highest rating, indicating excellent fire protection services, while a Class 10 means the department does not meet minimum ISO standards.

The rating system focuses on three key areas: alarm response (10%), the fire department itself (50%), and water supply (40%). These categories help determine how effectively a community can respond to and manage fires.

The last time the Prospect Heights Fire District was evaluated by ISO was in 1996, when it received a Class 4 rating. Since then, the department has made substantial improvements in alarm handling and overall operations, according to Chief Gould. He noted that they were just four points away from earning a Class 2 rating.

"The biggest challenge in our rating process continues to be the water supply, which makes up 40% of the total score," said Gould. "In many parts of our community, homes rely on private wells for drinking water, but those wells don’t provide water for firefighting."

In Prospect Heights, about 45% of the population depends on private wells, leaving them without a reliable water source for fire suppression. To address this, the fire district must use its own tanker trucks, extend long hose lines to distant hydrants, or request assistance from neighboring communities.

This improved rating reflects the hard work and dedication of the Prospect Heights Fire Department and is a positive step forward in enhancing public safety and reducing insurance costs for local residents and businesses.
