The new engine being built for Prospect Heights by Alexis Fire Apparatus is shaping up to be quite impressive. Here’s a detailed breakdown of its basic specifications and features: The chassis is based on the Spartan Metro Star model, paired with a powerful Cummins L9 450HP engine mated to an Allison transmission. The front Gross Axle Weight Rating (GAWR) is set at 21,500 pounds, while the rear GAWR is a robust 32,500 pounds, ensuring excellent weight distribution and stability. For firefighting capabilities, this engine will feature a Waterous 1500-GPM single-stage pump controlled by a pressure governor. It also includes a 750-gallon water tank, making it well-equipped for prolonged operations. Additionally, there’s an around-the-pump foam system with a 60-gallon tank for enhanced firefighting efficiency. One notable aspect of this build is the absence of a traditional light tower or generator. Instead, the vehicle will be equipped with Fire Tec LED scene lights, providing superior illumination without the bulk of additional equipment. The body is crafted entirely from stainless steel, which Alexis claims is lighter and more cost-effective than aluminum. Inside, the cab design is clean and functional, eliminating SCBA seats. All self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) and personal protective equipment (PPE) will be stored in a dedicated compartment directly behind the cab. The only in-cab storage will be for EMS gear, keeping the interior organized and uncluttered. Externally, the front bumper will house a master stream, preconnect hoses, and extrication tools for rapid response scenarios. For hose storage, the main hose bed can accommodate 2,000 feet of 5-inch hose, while a pullout hose bed will carry an additional 800 feet of 3-inch hose, giving firefighters ample options for various operational needs. Chassis delivery is scheduled for February, with the final delivery expected in late spring or early summer. An exact date will be confirmed once the chassis arrives.
