The basic specs and preliminary drawings for the new engine destined for Prospect Heights are coming together. The vehicle will be built on a Spartan Metro Star chassis, equipped with a powerful Cummins L9 450 horsepower engine paired with an Allison transmission. The front Gross Axle Weight Rating (GAWR) is set at 21,500 pounds, while the rear comes in at 32,500 pounds, ensuring robust performance under various conditions.
For firefighting capabilities, it will feature a Waterous 1500-GPM single-stage pump controlled by a pressure governor. The vehicle will also include a 750-gallon water tank and an around-the-pump foam system with a 60-gallon foam tank. Unlike traditional setups, this engine won’t have a light tower or generator; instead, it will be fitted with Fire Tec LED scene lights for optimal illumination during operations.
One interesting choice is the use of all stainless steel for the bodywork, which Alexis mentioned is lighter and more cost-effective compared to aluminum. The cab design has been streamlined, eliminating dedicated SCBA (Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus) seating. Instead, all SCBA units and personal protective equipment (PPE) will be stored in a compartment directly behind the cab. In terms of in-cab storage, only EMS gear will be kept inside the cabin.
On the exterior, the front bumper will house a master stream nozzle, preconnect hoses, and extrication tools. The main hose bed will accommodate 2,000 feet of 5-inch hose, while a pull-out hose bed will hold an additional 800 feet of 3-inch hose. This configuration should provide sufficient capacity for most firefighting scenarios.
Currently, the chassis is scheduled for delivery in February. Final assembly and delivery are expected in late spring or early summer, though the exact timing will depend on the arrival of the chassis.
