The Libertyville Fire Department in Lake County responded to a house fire at 516 Wrightwood Terrace just after 9 PM on Wednesday evening. The call came in from an off-duty firefighter who reported flames coming from an unoccupied home. Upon arrival, Libertyville crews encountered heavy fire originating from the rear of the structure and immediately requested mutual aid. As the fire vented through the roof and consumed the entire back porch, firefighters transitioned to a defensive position. Libertyville Quint 462 and Engine 461 were positioned in the 'A' Sector in front of the house. Both units are equipped with Wil-Burt telescoping light towers, which provided excellent visibility and safety for firefighters working in snowy and icy conditions. The 75-foot aerial was extended over the building, with floodlights at the tip offering additional illumination. The Metropolitan Emergency Support Services (MESS) was also on scene, providing a canteen and a warming bus for the crew. The fire was brought under control within about an hour, but the house was completely gutted and required extensive overhaul. Despite arriving after most of the firefighting had been completed, Larry Shapiro captured some compelling images from the scene. A full gallery is available here. This setup is especially valuable during night operations when the unit is often positioned directly in front of the structure. Behind it, the MESS warming bus provided additional comfort during the cold conditions. [Image: LBVL_8078] Quint 462 is in the foreground, while Engine 461 is in the background.
