I just got word from Larry Shapiro that he happened to be in the area when Battalion 7 received a call about a working fire at a three-story brick apartment building on 3111 W. Diversey. As it turns out, the fire had already spread to the rear porches of the main building and had extended to a two-story house located behind it on Troy. The battalion commander quickly called for a Box Alarm, and the additional companies that arrived helped get the situation under control in no time.
By the time I got there, just prior to the arrival of the Box Alarm units, crews were already hard at work dousing lingering hotspots. It was impressive to see how efficiently everyone was moving, ensuring that every last ember was extinguished.
Here are some photos I snapped while on scene. The first one shows firefighters meticulously washing down the affected rear porches after the flames were put out. In another shot, you can see the team working together to ventilate the roof—a crucial step in managing fires like this. There’s also an image of Engine 91, one of the first units on the scene, and a glimpse of Battalion 7 in action.
