Larry Shapiro sent over these notes from a recent fire scene he stumbled upon. It all went down at a three-story brick apartment building on 3111 West Diversey, where the 7th Battalion arrived just as things were heating up. Apparently, the fire had spread to the rear porches of the building and even extended to a two-story house located behind it on Troy. The battalion quickly called for a Box Alarm, and reinforcements soon arrived to tackle the blaze.
By the time Larry got there—before the full Box Alarm response kicked in—the crews were already hard at work dousing any lingering hotspots. His photos capture the intensity of the situation, showing firefighters diligently washing down the affected areas and working to prevent further damage.
One image shows a team focused on cooling off the rear porches, clearly illustrating the challenges they faced in containing the fire. Another shot captures firefighters working on ventilating the roof, a crucial step in managing fires like this one. There’s also a picture of Engine 91 on the scene, its presence a testament to the coordinated efforts of the Chicago Fire Department. And of course, no firefighting operation would be complete without the mobile command center, which appears in another photo, ready to guide the operation from start to finish.
Larry's gallery also includes a shot of Battalion 7 in action, highlighting the leadership and coordination required to manage such incidents. For those interested in more visuals, his website, Shapirophotography.net, offers an extensive collection of additional images.
The dedication and teamwork displayed by the firefighters that day were truly inspiring. It’s moments like these that remind us how essential their work is in protecting our communities.
