Choose the three key charge pump
The white LED driver market is heating up, with chip suppliers engaged in fierce competition. To stay ahead, they have developed advanced charge pump solutions that now hold a significant place in the industry. These charge pumps are capable of delivering higher backlight power, meeting the growing demands of larger and more complex color displays in portable and wireless devices. In addition, manufacturers are also promoting backlight panels that better match the brightness of LEDs with the performance of the driving chips.
However, OEMs are primarily focused on improving the efficiency of switched-capacitor (charge-pump) power supplies and optimizing performance when using boost converters. Charge pumps are typically used to drive LEDs connected in parallel, while boost converters are often preferred for series or series-parallel configurations.
Charge pump devices take up less space, making them a top choice for large OEMs. Their popularity is not only due to their versatility across different applications but also because some believe inductor-based power supplies may cause serious EMI issues. However, recent advancements in charge pump topologies have become quite common, and differences between chips mainly lie in subtle design improvements tailored for specific applications, offering users a competitive edge.
Tony Armstrong, Product Sales Manager at Linear Technology’s Power Division, stated, “Today’s devices must have both a primary and secondary display, and at least one RGB display for backlighting.†He highlighted the expanding design requirements. The company recently launched the LTC3206, a charge pump designed to meet these needs. He emphasized that current accuracy—how close the LED average current is to the expected value—and matching accuracy—how consistent the current is across multiple LEDs—are highly complex challenges.
“While customers are satisfied with 10% current accuracy, they often express concerns about matching accuracy, which should be under 5%,†he explained. Additionally, he pointed out that another often-overlooked factor is overall efficiency, particularly how much time the battery is directly on versus being charged in a 1.5 or 2x mode as voltage drops.
