SAN FRANCISCO, June 12, 2017 /PRNewswire/ – In an initiative aimed at motivating more students from underserved communities to explore careers in design, the Urban Arts Collective—a nonprofit dedicated to increasing representation of underrepresented groups in S.T.E.A.M. fields (science, technology, engineering, art, and math)—has teamed up with Autodesk, Inc. (NASDAQ: ADSK), a leader in software solutions for creators, to host Hip Hop Architecture Camps across several U.S. cities. These include Los Angeles, Austin, Atlanta, Houston, Detroit, and New York City. Additional locations are in the works, such as an after-school program in the San Francisco Bay Area. The camps are free and open to middle and high school students aged 10-17, who must apply to participate. ![Hip Hop Pioneer Roxanne Shante Uses Autodesk Tinkercad to Inspire Hip Hop Architecture Camp Participants](http://bsg-i.nbxc.com/blog/98a21634aa79156f8863c1edaf207023.jpg) "Programs like these are crucial because they offer opportunities and access to a new generation of future designers," said Daniel Guillory, head of diversity and inclusion at Autodesk. "Enhancing diversity in design isn’t just beneficial for creativity and productivity—it’s essential for staying relevant in today’s world." The summer 2017 series of Hip Hop Architecture Camps launched today in Los Angeles, with additional camps scheduled through August. Each camp, except for a weekend event in Houston, runs for one week and immerses students in architecture, urban planning, creative placemaking, and economic development through the lens of hip-hop culture. Students collaborate with architects, urban planners, designers, activists, and hip-hop artists to envision their communities' futures, using tools like Autodesk Tinkercad and SketchBook for Education to create digital models. The camp culminates in the production of a Hip Hop Architecture track and music video that encapsulates their collective designs, much like a recent project completed by participants in Madison, Wisconsin. This musical component draws inspiration from hip-hop's origins as a storytelling medium, allowing kids to express their perspectives on their communities. A recent CareerBuilder survey revealed that 21% of employers believe academic institutions aren't adequately preparing students for jobs within their organizations. Additionally, only 4% of architects in the U.S. are African American, according to the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards. To bridge this gap and engage underrepresented youth, the Urban Arts Collective leverages hip-hop as a gateway to exploring S.T.E.A.M. subjects. Michael Ford, also known as "The Hip Hop Architect," co-founded the Urban Arts Collective and is spearheading the design of the upcoming Universal Hip Hop Museum, alongside notable figures like Kurtis Blow. The museum is also supporting these camps. "Hip Hop Architecture Camps give young people exposure to potential careers in design while encouraging them to think critically about how their communities could evolve," said Kurtis Blow, hip-hop artist and co-founder of the Universal Hip Hop Museum. "With the Urban Arts Collective and Autodesk, we’re amplifying voices that have often been overlooked." Students interested in joining are encouraged to submit a short essay as part of their application.
