The Lake Forest Fire Department received a call about a suspected basement fire on Tuesday afternoon at 180 W. Laurel Avenue. When the first responders arrived, they didn't see any visible signs of fire from the outside, but once they entered the large house, they discovered smoke. Within approximately nine minutes, the initial alarm was escalated to a working still alarm, followed by a MABAS Box Alarm, and then a second alarm as smoke started seeping out from the eaves. Attached are some images taken by Larry Shapiro. There was a hydrant located at the end of the long, winding driveway. Both the first-due Lake Forest engine and the Knollwood quint had trouble maneuvering through the driveway. The fire was ultimately traced to the void space beneath the first floor and extended into some walls on the second floor. The alarm was further upgraded to a third alarm to bring in additional units as backup in case the fire spread beyond the teams already inside. Fortunately, the fire was brought under control relatively quickly without causing significant structural damage to the house. It was a bitterly cold day with temperatures just above freezing and a chilling windchill factor. Larry Shapiro and Tim Olk captured some incredible shots of the scene. You can see various firefighting vehicles, including a Lake Bluff squad unit and multiple engines from neighboring departments like Highland Park, Libertyville, and Mundelein. The narrow streets were lined with numerous fire trucks, creating quite the sight. Fighting this fire must have been challenging given the harsh winter conditions, but thanks to the coordinated efforts of all involved departments, the situation was handled efficiently.
