The Repair Process

Before starting, make sure you have a clear workspace and enough time to complete the job. You'll need basic automotive tools such as a floor jack, jack stands, sockets, and a torque wrench. Having the right equipment and taking your time will help avoid mistakes that could lead to bigger issues down the line.

Follow these steps to replace your Toyota Sienna's brake pads:

  1. Loosen the lug nuts slightly before lifting the van with a floor jack or hydraulic pump. Once lifted, secure it with jack stands for safety.
  2. Remove the wheels and set the lug nuts aside in a safe place.
  3. Locate the brake caliper and remove it by supporting the sliding pin and loosening the bolt. Be careful not to let the caliper hang freely, as this can damage the brake line.
  4. Take out the old brake pads along with the anti-squeal springs, shims, and support plates. These parts can cause noise if not replaced properly.
  5. Install the new brake pad support plates first. Then add the new pads, making sure the wear indicator is facing up.
  6. Place the anti-squeal shims and apply an anti-squeal compound to the inner side of each shim to reduce noise.
  7. Use a C-clamp or special tool to compress the caliper back into place before reattaching it to the rotor.
  8. Reinstall the caliper, tighten the bolts to 25 foot-pounds using a torque wrench, and put the wheel back on.
  9. Lower the vehicle and test the brakes by pumping the pedal a few times. Check the brake fluid level to ensure no leaks occurred during the process.

Congratulations! You’ve just successfully replaced the brake pads on your Toyota Sienna. This simple maintenance task can save you money and keep your vehicle safer on the road.
