Toyota Sienna Maintenance - Change Brake Pads

Is your Toyota Sienna making strange noises when you brake? It might be time to replace the brake pads. Here's a step-by-step guide on how to do it yourself.

If you're planning to change your own brake pads, make sure you have enough space and time to work comfortably. You'll also need a full set of basic tools. Taking your time and working in a well-lit area will help prevent mistakes. Rushing or working in a cramped space can lead to problems, so take it slow and stay focused.

The Repair Process

To complete this task, you'll need a floor jack, jack stands, a set of sockets, and a torque wrench. Follow these steps carefully:

  1. Loosen the lug nuts and lift the vehicle with a floor jack. Always use jack stands for safety before proceeding.
  2. Remove the wheels and keep the lug nuts in a safe place.
  3. Locate the brake caliper and remove it by supporting the sliding pin and loosening the bolt.
  4. Make sure not to let the caliper hang freely—use a wire hanger or similar item to support it. If it dangles, it could damage the brake line.
  5. Take off the anti-squeal springs, old brake pads, shims, and support plates.
  6. Install the new parts starting with the support plates.
  7. Add the pad wear gauge, replace the shims and support plates, and apply anti-squeal compound to the inner side of each shim.
  8. Use a C-clamp or special tool to push the caliper back into place.
  9. Once compressed, install the new brake pads with the wear indicator facing up.
  10. Reattach the caliper to the rotor and tighten the bolts to 25 foot-pounds using a torque wrench.
  11. Put the wheel back on and lower the van to the ground.
  12. Test the brakes by pressing the pedal a few times. They may feel soft at first but should return to normal after a few pumps.
  13. Check the brake fluid level after the job is done. You might have lost some during the process.

Congratulations! You've successfully replaced the brake pads on your Toyota Sienna.
