At Dallas Fort Worth International Airport, a groundbreaking experiment in electric vehicle (EV) charging is underway this summer. The airport has introduced robotic EV chargers that are being tested in its parking lots, offering a glimpse into the future of sustainable transportation.
These robots, named ZiGGY, are designed to autonomously approach parked vehicles, charge them, and then return to their base without human intervention. This innovative system is being showcased as part of a pilot program aimed at exploring new ways to support the growing number of electric vehicles on the road.
ZiGGY was developed by EV Safe Charge, a Los Angeles-based company specializing in flexible and temporary EV charging solutions. The firm has partnered with major automotive brands such as Jaguar, Porsche, and Nissan, providing scalable charging options for commercial clients. DFW Airport selected EV Safe Charge for its cutting-edge technology, which allows for greater accessibility compared to traditional fixed charging stations.
The demonstration, running from May through August, features a fully automated process. A driver can request a robot via an app, and it will locate an available spot, park itself, and wait for the vehicle. Once the car arrives, ZiGGY positions itself behind the vehicle to begin charging. When the task is complete, it returns to its charging station to recharge itself.
According to Caradoc Ehrenhalt, CEO of EV Safe Charge, the decision to feature ZiGGY was based on its ability to reach every car in a parking lot, rather than just a limited number of spots. This flexibility could significantly reduce issues like "ICEing," where gas-powered cars block EV charging spaces.
As mobile charging becomes more common, it could revolutionize how people access and use EV charging infrastructure. With this trial, DFW Airport is taking a step toward a more efficient and user-friendly future for electric mobility.
