Many people in the Chicago area are familiar with Steve Redick, a Senior Fire Alarm Operator with the Chicago Fire Department (CFD) and a contributor to this site. Steve’s father, Warren Redick, had a long and distinguished career with the CFD before retiring. A passionate photographer, Warren captured the essence of the fire service through his lens. Starting in the 1950s, he was ahead of his time by using Kodachrome slides—uncommon at the time when most photographers still shot in black and white. His keen eye for composition and precise exposure skills led to a stunning collection of images that captured both the dramatic and everyday moments of the CFD.
Steve describes the book as:
*"An historical photo retrospective of the Chicago Fire Department. The book features several hundred brilliantly restored Kodachrome images of the men, apparatus, and fires from the 1950s and 1960s. It also includes historical data such as dates, locations, equipment details, and a wealth of interesting facts and anecdotes. This is a must-see book filled with rare and beautiful photos from a bygone era in Chicago firefighting."*
There's a great image below featuring Warren Redick and Steve, highlighting their connection to the department and the legacy they’ve helped preserve.
