Dazhou vulcanization industry ready to go

On April 4, the official launch ceremony of the PetroChina-Chevron-Chuanchuan Northeast cooperation project and the opening of Unocal Donghai Co., Ltd. took place in Dazhou, marking a significant milestone in China's onshore oil and gas sector. This project is now the country's largest ongoing foreign cooperation initiative, focusing on the high-sulfur gas development in the Northeast Sichuan region. The project is expected to start production in 2009, with natural gas output reaching 2 billion cubic meters by 2010 and rising to 6 billion cubic meters by 2013. Dazhou is rich in natural gas resources, boasting an estimated 3.8 trillion cubic meters of potential reserves and 660 billion cubic meters of proven reserves. The natural gas found here is characterized by high production, high pressure, and high sulfur content, with some wells containing up to 17% hydrogen sulfide. To address this challenge, CNPC and Sinopec are constructing five natural gas purification plants in the area. By 2010, sulfur production from Dazhou’s natural gas is projected to reach 4.5 million tons, accounting for half of the nation’s total sulfur output and establishing Dazhou as Asia’s largest sulfur production base. Seizing the opportunity presented by the development of sulfur resources, Dazhou has actively expanded its natural gas industry chain, accelerated the growth of the vulcanization industry, and transformed its sulfur resource advantages into market and economic benefits. As a result, Dazhou has become a key hub for the vulcanization industry in China. To further boost its sulfur-based economy, Dazhou plans to build a 30-square-kilometer natural gas energy and chemical industrial zone. The city is adopting a strategy of going global and inviting foreign investment to attract major companies. Currently, eight projects have been successfully settled, and the vulcanization industry has become a core component of the chemical park. Several multinational corporations have already visited the area and expressed strong interest in deep processing of natural gas chemical products, offering new opportunities for the city to bring in advanced capital, technology, and management practices to develop a high-tech, high-value-added sulfur chemical industry. In recent years, Dazhou has positioned the natural gas chemical industry as its leading sector. Advanced domestic and international technologies have been fully integrated, especially in desulfurization, sulfur recovery, and tail gas treatment. The use of the world's most advanced automatic control systems ensures that sulfur recovery rates exceed 99.8%, with sulfur purity reaching 99.99%. To address the current issues of limited high-value sulfur products and poor economic efficiency, Dazhou is reorganizing its sulfur product layout, exploring new markets, and promoting deep processing. The city has signed cooperation agreements with universities such as China University of Petroleum (Beijing) and Southwest Petroleum University, leveraging their technical and human resources to support the development of sulfur-based chemicals. Experts from these institutions have also helped draft Dazhou’s sulfur chemical development plan. With government guidance and the leadership of Sinopec and PetroChina, Dazhou is working to establish a sulfur chemical engineering technology center. High-tech sulfur chemical enterprises are accelerating the development and utilization of sulfur-based products. Based on market demand, the city is focusing on products like polymer sulfur, dimethyl sulfoxide, sulfur-concrete, and sulfur-asphalt—products with strong market potential, low environmental impact, and high economic returns. These efforts aim to achieve comprehensive sulfur resource utilization, protect the environment, reduce investment risks, and improve economic efficiency. Dazhou is steadily moving toward becoming China’s leading sulfur production and processing base.
