Coal Science Institute successfully developed high-efficiency pulverized coal boiler
It was reported by the Energy Bureau of the National Development and Reform Commission that the Coal Science Research Institute has successfully developed a new high-efficiency pulverized coal boiler. This innovative system is equipped with independent intellectual property rights and integrates advanced technologies such as closed-loop operation, automated control, high-efficiency combustion, in-furnace desulfurization, and low excess air coefficient. The boiler achieves an operational efficiency of over 86%, which is more than 30% higher than that of traditional boilers.
One of the key features of this boiler is its fully automated control system. From coal grinding and conveying to staged combustion, dust removal, and desulfurization, all processes are managed automatically by a computer. This ensures rapid startup—within just 30 seconds, the boiler can reach normal operating conditions.
Another significant advantage is its energy-saving performance. In actual operation, the boiler's efficiency exceeds 86%, which is about 20% higher than conventional models. It also saves over 30% in coal consumption. Additionally, the simplified auxiliary systems reduce power consumption by approximately 30%.
Environmentally, the boiler is highly sustainable. Its fully enclosed design allows for the collection of fly ash, which can be reused as raw material for construction. With measures like furnace desulfurization, dry flue gas desulfurization, and bag dust collection, emissions of sulfur dioxide and soot are kept below 150 mg and 20 mg per standard cubic meter, respectively. These levels are significantly lower than current industrial boiler standards and even approach the emission levels of gas-fired boilers.
In terms of cost, the new pulverized coal boiler offers long-term economic benefits. Although the initial investment per steam ton is less than 250,000 yuan—about 1.1 to 1.4 times that of traditional boilers—the total operating costs for fuel, labor, and electricity are only around 70% of those of conventional boilers. This means the system can recoup its investment within two years.
Currently, the new high-efficiency pulverized coal boiler has been successfully tested in Shanxi Province. For example, a 4-ton-per-hour hot water boiler installed at the Datong City Procuratorate has been in continuous operation during a heating season. Another 4-ton-per-hour steam boiler at Zhangzhou Teachers College has been running steadily in the canteen and bathroom for over a year.
This technology marks a major step forward in coal utilization, offering a cleaner, more efficient, and economically viable alternative to traditional boilers.
