Two years after receiving a federal grant, the Antioch Fire Department is preparing to welcome its newest fire engine with a special event that harks back to the days of horse-drawn wagons. The department will host a ceremony featuring the traditional ritual of “wetting down†the new truck, pushing out the old one, and bringing the new one in.
The event is scheduled for May 29 at 7 p.m. at Fire Station 1, 835 Holbek Drive, and is open to the public.
“In the past, when horses pulled fire engines, they would wet down the wheels to protect the wooden spokes,†said Fire Chief John Nixon. “This tradition continues today as a way to honor our history.â€
The new truck will have a unique look, with a black roof and red body—unlike most of Antioch’s current fleet, which typically features white roofs. The apparatus committee chose this design to celebrate the department’s upcoming 100th anniversary next March and to adopt a new tradition.
“Black over red is very popular in Chicagoland,†Nixon added. “It also gives the truck a classic, striking appearance.â€
The new engine will also feature a newly designed Antioch Fire Department scramble emblem.
