The new Antioch engine will be stationed at Station 1, while the ALF (American LaFrance) unit will move to Station 3. The 1973 Pirsch engine has been retired.

The Daily Herald reported that Antioch will hold a “wet-down” ceremony for the new engine on May 29th.

Two years after receiving a federal grant, the Antioch Fire Department is preparing to welcome its newest fire engine with a special event reminiscent of the old horse-drawn days. The department will host a ceremony that includes the traditional “wetting down” of the new truck, as well as pushing out the old one and bringing in the new.

The event is scheduled for May 29 at 7 p.m. at Fire Station 1, 835 Holbek Drive, and is open to the public.

“In the past, when fire engines were pulled by horses, the tradition was to wet down the wheels and wipe them to maintain the wooden spokes,” said Fire Chief John Nixon. “This helped prevent them from drying out and breaking.”

The new truck will have a unique look compared to others. The department’s apparatus committee decided on a black roof with a red body, unlike most of Antioch’s trucks, which have white roofs.

“The committee saw this as a chance to mark the department’s 100th anniversary next March and adopt a new tradition,” Nixon explained. “Black over red is popular in Chicagoland.”

The truck will also feature a newly designed Antioch Fire Department scramble emblem.
