In 1990, X-Engine 8 (D-374) and its sister rig, X-Engine 106 (D-375), were among the second batch of fire engines sent for restoration. They were the last two units to return in June 1990. Both were leased to the production company behind the movie *Backdraft*. D-374 was temporarily reclassified as Engine 17 from July 1990 to February 1991, and then as Engine 51 from October 1990 to February 1991. The hose bed of D-374 played a key role in the movie, particularly in scenes set inside Engine 8’s house. During filming, most of the exterior shots and interior scenes of Engine 17 were filmed using X-Engine 8. X-Engine 106 also appeared as Engine 17 in some scenes. A notable difference between the two was the interior design: Engine 8 had diamond plate flooring and a gloss black finish, while Engine 106 had a flat black interior without diamond plate. Additionally, Engine 106 had its siren speaker mounted higher in front of the windshield.

After the film wrapped, D-374 was assigned to Engine 69, stationed at 4017 N. Tripp Ave. This unit was tasked with pumping out City Hall’s basement during the Great Flood of 1992. It was part of Chicago’s brief super-pumper initiative, equipped with four hard suction lines and 1,000 feet of 5-inch LDH. Its 140-gallon foam tank was designed for quick highway responses. Engine 69 was retired on June 13, 1995. To keep Engine 34 operational after it suffered gear failure, parts from Engine 69, including its transmission and PTO box, were repurposed. On August 28, 1996, Engine 69 was sold at auction to Erickson Trucks-n-Parts. It was first transported to their yard in Sturtevant, Wisconsin, and eventually ended up in their bone yard in Jackson, Minnesota, in 1997. In 1999, it was discovered by its current owner, who purchased it in 2003 and began a full restoration process.

Meanwhile, X-Engine 106 (D-375) was assigned to Engine 113. Like Engine 69, it was later sold to Erickson Trucks-n-Parts and made its way to the Jackson, MN bone yard. Engine 113 is now in the possession of a friend of Engine 69's current owner, but it’s in poor condition and may end up being used as a parts source for the Engine 17 restoration project. Another similar rig, Engine 14 (X-E113), also ended up in Jackson, MN, where it was completely stripped, its cab removed, and then shredded.

Another engine, Engine 34 (X-Engine 49), which never appeared in *Backdraft*, was later modified to look like Engine 17 before being sold to the East Norwegian Township Fire Department in Pennsylvania around 1999 or 2000. For a while, it was wrongly advertised as an authentic *Backdraft* rig. Recently, it was spotted for sale online, stripped of its markings, and its current location is unknown.
