On Sunday morning, the Maywood Fire Department responded to a significant fire at a vacant three-story building located at 907 S. 3rd Ave. As the incident unfolded, companies were dispatched with a Box Alarm due to intense flames in the attic and on the top floor. Firefighters from both Maywood and Melrose Park worked side by side to contain the blaze.
Gordon J. Nord, Jr., a local photographer, was on-site and captured several powerful images that highlighted the severity of the fire and the efforts of the responding crews. His photos show the intensity of the flames, the coordination between departments, and the critical work being done by firefighters.
One image features a Melrose Park lieutenant surveying the rear of the building before deploying their aerial ladder. Another shows the department’s quint arriving at the scene, ready to assist. A third photo captures firefighters inspecting conditions on an upper floor after removing a section of plywood from a window.
Another shot highlights Maywood firefighters working from the tip of their aerial, while another shows fire breaking through the roof and spilling out of upper-floor windows. The Melrose Park truck is seen directing a master stream toward the fire, and both departments are shown applying water through the roof to control the flames.
Firefighters are also seen working to gain better access to the attic, with one using a pike pole to open up a larger area. In a dramatic moment, flames are seen escaping over the head of a firefighter working from the aerial.
