LANXESS accelerates investment in China

Wang Yongli, President of LANXESS China, recently shared insights into the company’s expanding presence in the region. He revealed that the hydrated hydrazine plant in Weifang, China, which was originally located in Baytown, Texas, has been fully dismantled and reconstructed in its new location. The facility, with a capacity of 12,000 tons per year, is expected to start operations in the third quarter of this year. Speaking at the recent Chemical Week Asia-Pacific Chemical Conference in Singapore, Wang acknowledged that the project has faced some challenges but emphasized that the long-term outlook remains positive. The project is a joint venture between LANXESS and Weifang Yaxing Chemical, with ownership split at 55% and 45%, respectively. In addition, LANXESS plans to launch an antioxidant joint venture in Tongling in early 2007, which is expected to strengthen its position in the Chinese market. The company already operates several joint ventures in China that serve the rubber industry, further solidifying its local footprint. LANXESS is also making significant progress in Wuxi, where its 20,000-ton/year engineering plastics compounding facility will begin production next month. This plant will manufacture Durethan nylon and Pocan polyester semi-crystalline plastics. According to reports, the company is planning to add a second production line to scale up operations. In the past year, LANXESS doubled the capacity of its leather chemicals operations in Wuxi. Additionally, the company established its engineering rubber business headquarters in Shanghai last year and invested in a dedicated technology center for this division. Looking ahead, Wang Yongli stated that China will be the primary focus for LANXESS’s investment over the next five years. After strengthening its presence in China, the company plans to increase its investments in India as well. LANXESS has clearly identified China as a strategic priority, whether through new projects or the reallocation of assets from other regions. Currently, less than 5% of the company’s global assets are based in Asia, while Asian sales represent about 15% of total revenue. This shift underscores LANXESS’s growing confidence in the region’s potential and its commitment to long-term growth.
