Schaumburg Fire Department responded to a house fire on Holyoke Court around 4:30 AM. The incident began when a homeowner left something unattended on the stove, which led to a rapid fire spread. A resident had to wake a neighbor to alert emergency services before the fire department arrived. Upon arrival, first responders encountered heavy smoke coming from the front of the split-level home. The smoke remained low in the cul-de-sac and surrounded the engine positioned in front of the house.
The fire quickly escalated, involving the entire first floor. The shift commander upgraded the alarm to a MABAS Box Alarm within minutes. As the fire spread to the second floor and into the attic, multiple hand lines were deployed from all sides of the house. Access was challenging due to a burned-out stairway, requiring the use of nearly a dozen ground ladders for firefighters to reach the upper levels. Initially, crews worked from the ladders to pull ceilings and access the attic fire, until they could enter the second floor from inside the structure.
An overview photo shows the house located in a cul-de-sac with limited access for fire apparatus. Ground ladders were placed at all second-floor windows and opposite corners of the roof for safe access and egress. Schaumburg Engine 53, a 2000 E-One Hurricane, was the first unit on scene, followed by Truck 52 in the 'A Sector'. An RIT (Rapid Intervention Team) stood by as crews worked to knock down the fire from the second floor.
Both residents escaped safely, but a dog did not survive the fire. The temperature during the event was in the mid-20s, causing water on the ground to freeze. Larry Shapiro, a local photographer, arrived approximately 30 minutes after the initial call and captured several photos and a video of the incident.
