Chicago Heights responded to a fire yesterday at a vacant two-story building located on the 200 block of US Route 30. Upon arrival, first responders encountered a 35x40 structure engulfed in heavy smoke. The fire, which is currently under investigation and believed to be of a suspicious nature, ultimately destroyed the entire building, which housed apartments above a vacant storefront. Multiple fire departments from surrounding areas, including Matteson, Park Forest, South Chicago Heights, Flossmoor, Steger, Crete, and Homewood, provided mutual aid to assist with the incident.
The fire was reported around 11:00 AM and quickly escalated, requiring significant resources to bring under control. Firefighters worked diligently to contain the blaze, utilizing elevated master streams from Matteson’s ladder truck and Chicago Heights’ tower ladder. The scene was intense, with heavy smoke and flames visible from both floors of the building. Several crews made entry through the front door, deploying hand lines as thick smoke escaped the structure.
