On October 18, 2018, the "Development and Innovation Application of Key Components of New Plasma Mass Spectrometer" project, part of the National Major Scientific Instruments and Equipment Development Program during the 12th Five-Year Plan, held its acceptance meeting in Beijing. The event was led by Beijing Haiguang Instrument Co., Ltd. and hosted by Wei Yayun, the project director from the Ministry of Science and Technology's Evaluation Center. Li Jianling, a representative from the Beijing Municipal Science and Technology Commission, also attended the session. The acceptance team was chaired by Academician Yao Jiannian from the Chinese Academy of Sciences. The meeting brought together over 40 participants from 15 key project units, including Beijing Haiguang Instrument Co., Ltd., Beijing Pufang General Instrument Co., Ltd., Jilin University, Fudan University, China University of Geosciences (Wuhan), Donghua University of Technology, and several national research institutes and health organizations. Dr. Wang Houle, the project leader, provided a detailed report on the project’s progress to the expert panel. The initiative focused on advancing key components, instrument manufacturing, application development, industrialization, and team building. The project outlined six major goals and divided its work into 11 tasks across four dimensions: hardware, software, application, and engineering. Notably, the project developed new methods for plasma mass spectrometry that have broadened its applications in areas such as food safety, environmental monitoring, medical diagnostics, life sciences, energy resources, and water quality analysis. The project successfully completed the development of four plasma ion sources, two mass spectrometry interfaces, and control systems and software, which are crucial for the production of plasma mass spectrometers and can be adapted for other types of mass spectrometers. The expert group praised the project for overcoming critical technological challenges and developing three types of plasma mass spectrometers with draft applications and standards in multiple fields. They concluded that the project had met all its objectives and passed the comprehensive acceptance. This achievement marks a significant step forward for China's mass spectrometry industry, demonstrating strong collaboration between academic institutions, enterprises, and government agencies. The successful completion of this project not only enhances domestic scientific capabilities but also sets a foundation for future innovations in analytical instrumentation.
