HJ3 Composite Technologies Shines at the 2013 Cleantech Open Accelerator

HJ3 Composite Technologies is thrilled to share its remarkable success at the 2013 Cleantech Open Accelerator. The company stood out by winning the National Winner titles in both "Chemicals and Advanced Materials" and "People's Choice," while also securing second place in the Grand Prize for Cleantech Company of the Year. These impressive achievements were announced at the Cleantech Open Global Forum, often called the "Academy Awards of Cleantech." This event marked the final stage of the accelerator program and concluded the 2013 Cleantech Open Global Ideas Competition. The top grand prize was awarded to PowWow Energy, selected from five national category winners.

Here are the regional winners in each category:

  • Air-Water-Waste – Polymer Green (Western region): Offers a groundbreaking solution for processing landfill waste plastic.
  • Energy Generation – Helion Energy (Pacific Northwest region): Working toward affordable and practical fusion energy.
  • Green Building – Bio-Adhesive Alliance (Southeast region): Produces low-cost, durable adhesive from swine manure as an eco-friendly alternative to petroleum-based asphalt.
  • Chemicals and Advanced Materials – HJ3 Composite Technologies (Rocky Mountain region): Known for advanced composite systems used in over 10,000 applications worldwide.
  • Information and Communications Technologies – PowWow Energy (Western region): Recognized for its impactful contributions to cleantech innovation.

James Butler, CEO of HJ3, expressed deep appreciation for the mentorship provided by the Cleantech Open, which helped refine the company’s business strategy and messaging. He emphasized the importance of finding creative solutions that tackle complex challenges while optimizing resources.

HJ3 delivers advanced composite materials that strengthen aging infrastructure, reduce landfill waste, lower energy use, and cut costs compared to traditional concrete and steel repairs. With over 10,000 global applications, HJ3 is addressing the $6 trillion infrastructure repair challenge with a $4 trillion funding gap. Their patented systems offer customers a more cost-effective and environmentally friendly alternative.

"We’re incredibly grateful to the volunteers, coaches, and leaders behind this incredible organization," Butler said. "Being named both the Chemicals and Advanced Materials winner and the People’s Choice winner among such a strong group of finalists is a huge honor."

The 2013 Cleantech Open Accelerator started with over 300 companies nationwide, competing across eight regions since April. In October, 22 regional semi-finalists were selected, including HJ3 and Grannus, LLC from Tucson, AZ. Both were celebrated at the annual Global Forum in Silicon Valley. Grannus won the Sustainability award in the Rocky Mountain Regional Finals and placed second in the National Sustainability competition. Their innovative nitrogen fertilizer technology offers a 30% cost advantage and a 40% construction savings, along with a three-fold sustainability benefit.
