HJ3 Composite Technologies Shines at the 2013 Cleantech Open Accelerator

HJ3 Composite Technologies is proud to announce its outstanding performance at the 2013 Cleantech Open Accelerator, where it was recognized as a national winner in both the "Chemicals and Advanced Materials" category and the "People's Choice" award. The company also secured second place in the grand prize for "Cleantech Company of the Year." These honors were announced at the Cleantech Open Global Forum, often called the "Academy Awards of Cleantech," which marked the conclusion of the 2013 Cleantech Open Global Ideas Competition. PowWow Energy took home the top prize, selected from five national category winners.

Here are the regional winners in various categories:

  • Air-Water-Waste – Polymer Green (Western region): A clean solution for processing landfill waste plastic.
  • Energy Generation – Helion Energy (Pacific Northwest region): Working toward affordable and practical fusion energy.
  • Green Building – Bio-Adhesive Alliance (Southeast region): Produces low-cost, durable adhesive from swine manure as an eco-friendly alternative to petroleum-based products.
  • Chemicals and Advanced Materials – HJ3 Composite Technologies (Rocky Mountain region): Known for advanced composite systems used in over 10,000 applications globally.
  • Information and Communications Technologies – PowWow Energy (Western region): Recognized for its innovative contributions.

James Butler, CEO of HJ3, thanked the Cleantech Open mentoring program for helping refine the company’s business strategy and messaging. He emphasized the importance of finding creative solutions that tackle complex problems while using fewer resources.

HJ3 specializes in advanced composite materials that strengthen aging infrastructure, reduce landfill waste, lower energy use, emissions, and costs compared to traditional concrete and steel repairs. With over 10,000 global applications, the company is addressing the $6 trillion estimated cost of infrastructure decay and a $4 trillion funding gap. HJ3 helps customers achieve more with less, reducing environmental impact and expenses.

Butler added, “We’re incredibly grateful to the volunteers, coaches, and leaders who make this organization possible. Being named both the Chemicals and Advanced Materials winner and the People’s Choice winner among such a strong group of finalists is a huge honor.”

The 2013 Cleantech Open Accelerator started with over 300 companies across eight regions, with 22 regional semi-finalists chosen in October. HJ3, along with Grannus, LLC from Tucson, AZ, was celebrated at the annual Global Forum in Silicon Valley. Grannus won the Sustainability award in the Rocky Mountain Regional Finals and placed as a runner-up in the National Sustainability competition. Their nitrogen fertilizer innovation offers a 30% cost advantage and a 40% construction cost edge, plus triple the sustainability benefit.

The Cleantech Open is the world’s largest cleantech accelerator, dedicated to identifying, funding, and supporting entrepreneurs solving today’s energy, environmental, and economic challenges. Since 2006, it has helped 727 startups raise over $800 million in capital and create thousands of green jobs. With a network of 1,500+ volunteers and sponsors, the nonprofit connects public and private sectors to advance cleantech globally.

HJ3 thanks its sponsors and partners, including Chevron, University of Phoenix, Wells Fargo, and PARC, as well as regional supporters like Cleantech Innovations New England, Deloitte, and NYSERDA.
