This is from Eric Haak: On Sunday afternoon (June 2), crews from Chicago’s 6th Battalion faced a challenging rescue situation at the intersection of 53rd and Union. A tree trimmer became stuck upside down at a moderate height with a broken leg. Truck 18 positioned itself to use its ladder to support the victim while Squad 5 and Tower Ladder 39 made their way to the scene. With the man’s weight resting on Truck 18’s aerial, the slow and careful process of untangling him began. Eventually, Tower Ladder 39 maneuvered its basket underneath the victim and safely lowered him to the ground. The entire operation took roughly 45 minutes. The only access available for Tower Ladder 39 was through a vacant lot that had become very soft due to heavy rain. To stabilize the ladder, firefighters used fence posts being installed in the lot. It was a tough environment, but the team managed to pull off a successful rescue under difficult conditions. The injured worker was later taken to the hospital for further evaluation and treatment.
