Greenhouse Cucumber Production Increase Efficiency Three Tips

Cucumbers are a popular vegetable, and their quality is often judged by whether they are straight or curved. Straight cucumbers typically command a much higher price than curved ones, especially during the winter season. A straight cucumber can be sold for up to 6 yuan per kilogram, while a curved one may only fetch between 1.0 to 1.2 yuan. The occurrence of bent cucumbers is usually caused by factors such as insufficient light, low temperatures, or poor nutrition. While improving growing conditions can help, there are also alternative methods to correct the issue. For example, applying a solution like 920 (a plant growth regulator) on one side of the cucumber might help, but this method is not very effective. It's labor-intensive and can even affect the quality of the final product. The development of the "cucumber straightening" technique has proven to be highly beneficial. This method is simple, cost-effective, non-polluting, and efficient, making it an ideal solution for farmers. The process involves using a small tile or brick (about 2 cm thick and 4 cm long), wrapped with a thin rope. Once the cucumber reaches about 10 cm in length, the small brick is hung on the stem. As the cucumber grows, the weight helps to straighten the curve, resulting in a more marketable product. Another important technique is the "cucumber elbow control." When the balance between vegetative and reproductive growth is disrupted, the plant may become overly vigorous, leading to slow melon growth or even withering—commonly referred to as "melon decline." This can significantly reduce yield. Traditional methods such as limiting fertilizer, pruning roots, or spraying chlorpyrifos have not always yielded satisfactory results. In contrast, the elbow control technique is simple, effective, and widely adopted. The method involves gently bending the top of the overgrown vine downward, which reduces its growth potential and redirects nutrients toward the fruit. This helps control excessive vegetative growth and promotes better fruit development, ultimately increasing production. Finally, the "vine-dropping" technique is essential for managing cucumber plants in the later stages of growth. As the plants age, lower leaves may yellow and lose their photosynthetic ability, leading to reduced fruiting areas. To extend the productive period, the vine-dropping method is used. This involves laying the entire plant down, allowing the upper part to continue growing. The specific steps include pressing the lower part of the plant around the roots, ensuring that 12 to 15 healthy leaves remain on the plant. At the same time, the canopy should be kept approximately 40 cm away from the greenhouse film. This technique effectively prolongs the growth cycle, boosting total cucumber output by more than 30%. Overall, these techniques offer practical and sustainable solutions for improving cucumber quality and yield.
