Last night, Deerfield Fire responded to a serious incident where a vehicle plunged into a pond on the 500 block of Lake-Cook Road. The first police officer on scene managed to climb onto the car's roof, break through the window, and help the driver escape. During the rescue, the officer suffered hand cuts while freeing the driver from the submerged vehicle.
At the time, it wasn’t clear whether there were other people in the car, as the driver couldn’t confirm. As a result, a call was made for additional divers to check the vehicle thoroughly. Fire departments from Highland Park, Northbrook, Lake Forest, and Lincolnshire arrived with specialized divers who confirmed that no other occupants were inside the car. Once the inspection was complete, the divers attached a chain to the vehicle so the tow company could safely retrieve it from the water.
Tim Olk was on the scene and captured several powerful images documenting the event. His photos show the dramatic moment the car ended up in the pond, the emergency response, and the recovery process.
One image captures a late-model Mercedes Benz that had left the road and was mostly submerged in the pond. Another shows a Deerfield Police sergeant with injured hands after breaking the window to free the driver. Additional photos highlight the fire department’s efforts, including Engine 20 lighting up the scene, divers preparing the car for removal, and the tow truck pulling the vehicle from the water.
The final images show the car being lifted out of the pond and loaded onto a rollback truck. Tim has shared more photos in a full gallery, offering a comprehensive look at the incident.
