Maoming million tons of ethylene equipment 60% localization
Recently, the construction management department of Maoming Petrochemical's 1-million-ton/year ethylene renovation and expansion project announced that the total investment reached 7.49 billion yuan. This marks the official commissioning of China's first million-ton ethylene project, with over 60% of the equipment locally produced. Industry experts believe this project serves as a significant demonstration and reference for the localization of large-scale ethylene equipment in the country.
The project features a 100,000-ton/year ethylene cracker jointly developed by Sinopec and Lummus Corporation from the U.S. It also includes two 46-meter polypropylene loop reactors and various towers designed by Maoming Gravity Petrochemical Equipment Co., Ltd., along with specialized valves. The core of the ethylene cracking system — a 600,000-ton/year ethylene cracker compressor — was successfully developed by the Shenyang Blower Group. After testing, it has shown excellent performance and is currently the largest such compressor developed independently in China. Additionally, the world’s largest ethylene cold box, manufactured by the Hangzhou Oxygen Concentrator Group, uses a three-way refrigeration process and can handle a maximum design pressure of 3.96 MPa.
A range of domestically developed petrochemical equipment, including high-efficiency heat exchangers and cryogenic pumps, have also been integrated into the Maoming Ethylene Expansion Project.
According to Wang Tingjun, former director of the China National Petroleum Corporation's major equipment localization office, after more than a decade of R&D, the domestic production rate for 300,000-ton/year ethylene projects has exceeded 70%. However, a systematic capability for developing large-scale equipment is still under development. The Maoming project, with an annual capacity of 600,000 tons, represents a transitional step toward future million-ton ethylene projects and offers valuable lessons for the localization of large-scale ethylene equipment.
It is reported that since last year, China has successively developed and manufactured large-scale ethylene systems through four major projects in Tianjin, Zhenhai, Fushun, and Chengdu. These projects are part of the country’s efforts to rely on domestic technology. According to the National Development and Reform Commission's plan, the localization rate for the Chengdu project will reach 85%, with four sets of equipment fully using domestic technology. Three sets will prioritize domestic and foreign technology collaboration, while the remaining devices will use foreign technology, with only the ethylene unit introducing external technology packages.
