I. Introduction

The insulating oil dielectric strength tester, also known as an oil breakdown voltage tester or BDV tester, is a critical tool used in electrical maintenance and testing. It measures the dielectric strength of transformer oil by observing at what voltage a spark occurs between two electrodes immersed in the oil, separated by a specific gap. A low BDV value indicates the presence of moisture and conductive substances in the oil, which can affect its insulation properties.

This device uses a pot with fixed electrodes spaced 2.5 mm apart (some models use 4 mm). The test involves gradually increasing the voltage until the oil breaks down, providing crucial data on its quality and safety for use in transformers.
