From excerpts on DailyHerald.com:
Carol Stream Fire Chief Rick Kolomay is stepping down due to health issues after a remarkable 37-year career. Kolomay stated that he must resign because of severe, long-term injuries that prevent him from fulfilling his duties. He has been on medical leave since December and recently underwent shoulder surgery, according to officials.
The board hasn't yet chosen a replacement, and Kolomay's final day with the fire district remains undecided. The board of trustees plans to discuss his retirement during their meeting on February 15th. Historically, the top position has been filled internally from within the 15-square-mile district, which serves Carol Stream as well as parts of Bloomingdale, Winfield, and Glendale Heights.
"I don't think anyone, including Rick himself, saw this coming," remarked fire district trustee Rick Fisher.
In Kolomay's absence, Deputy Fire Chief Bob Hoff, a former Chicago Fire Department commissioner, has been managing his responsibilities. Hoff joined the district in 2012 following a career reshuffle, just days after leaving his role as head of the nation's second-largest fire department. His current role focuses on firefighter training and fitness programs.
Deputy Chief Perry Johnson transitioned to a civilian position overseeing finances and the fire prevention bureau.
Hoff and Kolomay first met back in 1985 when Hoff attended a class Kolomay taught at the state fire academy. After 23 years with the Schaumburg Fire Department, Kolomay returned to the district where he started his career in 1979. He advanced from deputy chief to interim chief in 2009 and officially took over the position shortly afterward.
As a third-generation firefighter, Kolomay fostered a strong sense of unity among staff and emphasized rigorous training, noted Fisher. "We've achieved some great milestones together, negotiated solid contracts, and addressed personnel challenges," said Rick Bonk, president of Carol Stream Firefighters Association Local 3192 and a district lieutenant. "Under his leadership, our firefighting skills have significantly improved."
Looking back on his career, Kolomay highlighted his efforts in forming a collaborative alliance among neighboring fire departments. Established in February 2012, the group now follows standardized procedures for firefighting instead of individual guidelines. Kolomay described his 37-year journey as a commendable run, closely matching the duration of his father's career as a Chicago firefighter.
